Author, podcaster and influencer Jack Toohey (OA2010) returned to SACS earlier in September to speak with the School Captains and Vice-Captains during their regular morning tea with Dr McGonigle. Jack brought with him copies of his new book, Better Things Are Possible, and plenty of thoughtful conversation. He spoke with the students about possibility versus probability, prompting the quick-witted question, "Shouldn't your book be called Better Things Are Probable?", before exploring topics such as the housing crisis, climate justice, mental health, and the craft of writing a first book. Later, Jack met with the Aboriginal Studies class taught by Old Andrean Bindi Jarvis (OA2010) to discuss activism in the context of First Nations issues, continuing his encouragement for students to engage with compassion and curiosity in the world around them. His message in the book he gifted to the School captured the spirit of SACS perfectly: "SACS taught me the power of community, how to engage compassionately with the world around us, and the power of sticking your hand up to have a crack at something new or to help someone you aren't even sure you can help. SACS taught me so much about the value of community, care, compassion and giving things a crack. The School played such a big part of who I am today, which means it played a big part in this book too! Will always be grateful for the opportunity—and always glad to see the #sacspride stays strong with every new cohort." Great to see Jack using his platform to spark thoughtful conversations about optimism, courage and social change; and to see the values nurtured at SACS continuing to shape his work and inspire others. Jack's book, Better Things Are Possible, is out now and available through major booksellers. |
