Big Questions: How do we make sense of Trump?

How do we make sense of Trump? At SACS, students and staff tackled that very question in the latest Big Questions forum, which was a lively evening that proved why thoughtful discussion and open minds are the hallmarks of every future Old Andrean.

What happens when a group of SACS students sits down to unpack one of the biggest political puzzles of our time? You get a night of sharp thinking, good humour and surprisingly hopeful conversation.

The latest event in our Big Questions series took place in the Chapter House on 28 August, asking: How do we make sense of Trump?

Launched in 2023, Big Questions is a community seminar series that brings students and experts together to explore complex issues shaping our world. It's the kind of learning that helps shape the curious, thoughtful graduates who go on to become Old Andreans, people who engage in their communities with awareness, empathy and courage.

This year, we were joined by Nick Bryant, award-winning author, broadcaster, former BBC foreign correspondent and SACS parent, who drew on decades of reporting from Washington and deep expertise in American politics. In conversation with Dr Julie McGonigle, and fielding questions from students, Nick unpacked the cultural and political forces that led to Trump's rise and what they reveal about leadership, democracy and the media.

Dr McGonigle reflected: "By teaching 'character in action', we create opportunities for students to grow morally, spiritually and intellectually, to flourish as people who contribute to their communities and the wider world."

The night closed on a hopeful note and a reminder that democracy doesn't have to be distant or cynical. As Nick pointed out, Australia's compulsory and preferential voting and humble democracy sausage show that civic participation can be both meaningful and accessible.
